Where do the boats leave from?
Most tours leave from Sorrento's own harbour, Marina Piccola, below the town centre. From Sorrento: Capri Boat Tour with Snorkeling & Drinks and Capri Boat Tour From Sorrento With Island Free Time both board there, and From Sorrento: Capri Boat day Cruise & Blue Grotto uses Marina Grande, the old fishing harbour a short walk from the centre.
Others start with a short van ride. Several You Know! Boat tours meet at the Achille Lauro car park in Sorrento and take you to the boat by van, From Sorrento: Capri Boat Trip with Limoncello Tasting meets in Piano di Sorrento itself, and From Sorrento: Capri Boat Cruise with Drinks & Pickup boards at Marina della Lobra in Massa Lubrense. The cheapest well-reviewed tour, the Nerano boat, sails from Marina del Cantone, about 40 minutes from Sorrento by coach.
If you are staying outside Sorrento, check the pickup list before booking. The Meditours trip also collects from Vico Equense and Positano. Several operators charge €10 to €20 (about $11 to $23) a person to fetch you from towns such as Vico Equense, Seiano or Castellammare.
How the day changes with the price
Mostly a smaller boat and more included on board. The coast you see changes much less than the price does: almost every tour loops the island past the Faraglioni, the White and Green Grottoes and the Punta Carena lighthouse.
Around $65 to $100: a ride to Capri and a long afternoon on the island. These are mostly larger boats that take you across, drop you for five or six hours and show you the island on a shorter loop, usually without drinks. The HP Travel limoncello trip is the most-reviewed example, at $78 with 4.4/5 from more than 2,100 reviews, plus a €5 (about $6) landing fee.
Around $105 to $150: a smaller boat with drinks and swim stops. Most tours are in this range. You get a skipper who guides as you go, prosecco or beer on board, a swim stop or two and three to four hours ashore, on a boat that is often capped at 12 people. The Meditours trip is our example.
Above $150: lunch, eight-person boats or a different time of day. Here you find tours with lunch on board, Sorrento: Capri Small-Group Afternoon Cruise with Swim Stops, which runs into the evening, and a fishing trip that cooks the catch for lunch. The eight-person You Know! Boat tour is the one we'd look at first.
Inside the $120 to $150 range, the price tells you very little. The most-reviewed Lubrense Boats tour and its Massa Lubrense twin list the same drinks, swim stop and snorkel masks in the same words, $9 apart. Compare them on reviews, pickup and whether the landing fee is included.

Every tour in these tables links to its booking page, with its rating and review count beside it. A low review count is a reason to read the reviews first, not a verdict. Newer tours with only a handful of reviews also run from Sorrento at about $85 to $244 a person; we've left them out until they have more of a track record.

Every tour in this table offers free cancellation, on most up to 24 hours before departure, so booking ahead costs you little if the weather turns.
Plan on cash for three things. None of the tours in the table includes the Blue Grotto ticket.
Lunch ashore is the other cost to plan for. Tours without food on board leave you to eat on Capri during your free time.
Some tours cost more than their headline price suggests. Capri: Boat tour from Sorrento with a stop for swimming is listed at $108 but adds €50 (about $57) a person at the meeting point for fuel, embarkation and the landing tax, which takes it to about $165. And From Sorrento: Capri Boat Tour with Blue Grotto Optional, at $106 and rated 4.7/5 from more than 3,300 reviews, sells a four-hour cruise that does not land on Capri alongside the full day, so check which option the price is for; going ashore on the full day costs €10 (about $11) at the meeting point.
At the starting price, two people on the Meditours trip pay $248 and four people pay $496, plus the landing fee.
What does a private boat cost?
Private boats are priced per boat, not per person. Among those with a solid review record, the private boat for up to six starts at $796 and Capri Island & Blue Cave Private Boat Tour from Sorrento at $831 for up to five. Split six ways, the first comes to about $133 each, less than the $146 a seat on the most-reviewed shared tour costs once its landing fee is added.
The cheapest private listings can cost more than they look. From Sorrento: Full Day Capri Private Boat Trip with Drinks is listed from $486 for up to four, rated 4.0/5 from only 26 reviews, and adds €300 (about $342) for fuel, so it comes to about $828, more than the $796 boat for six with fuel included. On most private boats you also pay a €100 (about $114) docking fee if you want to land at Capri's main harbour. One listing notes that you can usually avoid it by stopping for lunch at a seafront restaurant instead.
Tours that offer less for the price
From Sorrento: Capri Boat Tour with Free Time on the Island costs from $74 but is rated 3.8/5 from 679 reviews, well below the other tours at this price. You cross on the public hydrofoil and change to an open boat for about 90 minutes round the island with an audio guide. The Nerano boat costs $6 less, has a live guide and is rated 4.8/5.
Capri: Blue Cruise with Guide from Sorrento, C.Stabia, Seiano is the cheapest at $66, and it includes the landing fee, but it is rated 3.6/5 from 67 reviews and the boat calls at Castellammare and Seiano before it reaches Sorrento at 10:50.
The $108 swim-stop tour with the €50 surcharge and the $486 private boat with the €300 fuel charge, both above, are the other two to read carefully before booking.
Is it worth paying more?
Pay more if a smaller boat, lunch on board or hotel pickup will make your day easier, or if there are five or six of you and a private boat works out at about the same price per person. If what you want is time in Capri town, the $68 Nerano boat gives you more of it than most tours costing twice as much.
